The context
Apollo 13 had launched successfully and was en route to the moon when an onboard oxygen tank exploded. The blast crippled the service module, cut electrical power, contaminated onboard systems, and made the original mission objective impossible.
What people decided
NASA rapidly abandoned the moon landing, powered down the command module, used the lunar module as a lifeboat, performed carefully calculated burns to free-return the spacecraft toward Earth, and improvised new life-support and reentry procedures.
What happened
Apollo 13 safely splashed down in the Pacific on April 17, 1970. The mission became one of the best-known examples of crisis judgment, disciplined improvisation, and technical teamwork under pressure.
